Number of Drug Dependent Babies Increasing Throughout the State

In the state of Tennessee, the number of babies born dependent on drugs has risen substantially over the past few years, especially this year. Through September, 779 babies have been diagnosed with neonatal abstinence syndrome or NAS, a record high for the state. Of those 779 cases, East Tennessee – that is, Knoxville to Northeast Tennessee – accounts for almost half. While there are still several questions surrounding NAS, the state is working with several universities and local organizations to help solve the problem.
