U.S. Surgeon General Vivek H. Murphy recently released a landmark report that details the latest information on several public health crises in the country. In the report, Facing Addiction, Murphy lists drug and alcohol addiction alongside several other public health crises, and calls the current epidemic a “moral test” for America.
According to the report, more than 20.8 million people in the United States were affected by substance abuse disorders in 2015. The disease, which affects as many people as diabetes and almost twice as many as those with cancer, has killed more than 500,000 people since 2000.
